Anti-Wrinkle Injection - FAQs
Are anti-wrinkle injections poisonous?
Anti-wrinkle injections are a safe treatment for wrinkles that are caused by muscle movement. Anti-wrinkle injections are made from a toxin derived from cultured bacteria. The dose that is used to treat wrinkles is tiny and does not have the power to cause systemic problems. In fact, doses that are hundreds of times more potent are used to treat movement disorders in young children and even these large doses are safe.
Will I lose all expression and movement in my face?
Anti-wrinkle injections are placed in the specific muscles that are causing the wrinkles to develop. The latest trend in anti-wrinkle treatment retains movement in some areas of the face to allow facial animation and a more natural, but refreshed look. For example, if you have your frown lines treated with anti-wrinkle injections, you will not be able to frown, but your face will still move when you smile, laugh, look surprised etc.
Do anti-wrinkle injections hurt?
This is a fine needle treatment so no anaesthetic is required. A small sting may be felt at the time of injection, which is usually best described as being uncomfortable but not painful.
How many injections will I need?
This depends on the area being treated, but the frown lines usually require 5-6 tiny injections.
How do anti-wrinkle injections work?
Anti-wrinkle injections block the chemical messages sent through the nerves to the muscles. This results in a temporary paralysis of the muscles that are causing the wrinkles to develop. By resting those muscles, the skin smoothes and the wrinkles soften or disappear.
When will I see results?
Anti-wrinkle injections usually take 3-5 days to start working and full results are seen by 10 days after treatment. Over the next few weeks, you may see further softening of the deeper wrinkles as the skin continues to relax and release the creases.
How long do anti-wrinkle injections last?
Anti-wrinkle injections will last for up to 4 months before the lines gradually return. The effects tend to last longer with further treatments.
Are there any side effects?
The main side effect of anti-wrinkle injections is a reduction or elimination of wrinkles in the treated area! Other side effects may include slight nausea, headache and temporary redness, swelling or bruising at the injection site. There are some side effects specific to the area being treated and these will be discussed with you at your appointment.
Do I need anti-wrinkle injections or wrinkle fillers?
This will be assessed and explained at your appointment, as it may be necessary to use combination therapy. Your options will be discussed with you before any treatment starts.
